In a Simcoe courtroom, a jury found Jordaine Wilson not guilty of second-degree murder in the 2023 stabbing death of his 90-year-old grandmother, Marlene Wilson, inside their Waterford home. After roughly eight hours of deliberation, the jury delivered a verdict that the Crown described as shocking, with the prosecutor telling reporters there was no basis for appeal.
The Crown's case rested on circumstantial forensic evidence, including a kitchen knife found under Wilson's bed bearing his DNA and trace amounts of the victim's blood. Prosecutors offered no motive. Robb MacDonald, acting for the defence, drew the jury's attention to gaps in the case and to other people with ready access to the unlocked home.
MacDonald said he was elated with the verdict and praised the jury's attentiveness, noting that when the burden of proof was carefully applied, an acquittal was warranted. Court officers removed his client's leg shackles, and Jordaine Wilson walked out a free man.
