Who Is Robb MacDonald?

Welcome to the law office of Robb MacDonald, where exceptional legal defence meets compassionate client care. As a premier criminal defence lawyer in Canada, Robb understands the complexities and stakes involved in criminal cases. He provides robust and personalized legal representation to those facing criminal charges, ensuring every client receives the best possible outcome.

Robb MacDonald is one of the leading criminal trial lawyers in Canada. He has won countless trials in Superior Court, numerous jury trials, and multiple murder cases. In the summer of 2025, Robb won two back-to-back murder trials: within a few short weeks of one another, two different juries returned verdicts of "not guilty", and two of Robb's clients went from facing murder convictions to walking out of their respective courthouses.

There is a reason that clients facing the most serious charges in Canada trust Robb. To put it simply: he is one of the best.

Robb is driven by the human element of criminal law and enjoys the opportunity to help others navigate out of the worst problems of their lives. He is an easy-going and social individual who enjoys good relationships with Crown Attorneys and other members of the Ontario criminal defence bar. Robb gets along well with his clients and does what he can to put them at ease while representing them with force and professionalism.

Robb's forte is criminal jury trials. He has gone out of his way to take on complex and challenging cases and to put in the time required to achieve incredible results for his clients. In doing so, Robb has earned a reputation for being honest, hardworking, and committed to winning.

Training & Background

Robb received his J.D. from Queen's University in Kingston. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Texas at Austin, where he played hockey and water skied for the University of Texas.

After his first year in law school, Robb began working at the law offices of the renowned Edward Greenspan QC in Toronto. Before developing his own criminal law practice, he articled in the Advocacy department at Gowling WLG, one of Canada's largest law firms. In 2003, Robb left a career in finance at RBC Dominion Securities to fulfil a lifelong goal of becoming a trial lawyer.

While in law school, Robb won two provincial championships for courtroom advocacy: the Arnup Cup and the Ontario Trial Lawyers' Association Cup, where he was recognized as the best individual advocate in the competition. Today Robb plays a dominant and senior role in one of the premier criminal law chambers in the country, alongside renowned colleagues including John Struthers and David Butt. He and his colleagues are among the best criminal lawyers in Canada.

A Personal Approach to the Law

An effective criminal lawyer must be able to advance a client's cause without offending the adversaries or judges who preside over criminal proceedings. Instead, an effective advocate negotiates with respect, self-restraint, and patience. Lawyers who are well received by others tend to achieve more favourable results for their clients.

Robb is keenly aware of how important it is to negotiate firmly without offending those around him. Many of his most contented clients have benefited immensely from his ability to "negotiate away" their charges. Robb has repeatedly had clients' charges dropped even when those charges involved numerous and serious allegations.

As I'm entering a third decade as a judge on this bench, I can count on one hand the number of times I have said this to counsel. Your courtesy, your civility and your professionalism are a testament to your considerable skills as advocates.
